Commvault Geo Shield: strengthening data sovereignty and cyber resilience

Commvault introduces Geo Shield, strengthening data protection and compliance for enterprises through enhanced cloud sovereignty solutions.

Commvault, a provider of enterprise-scale data resilience solutions, has unveiled Commvault Geo Shield. This solution is designed to aid organisations in safeguarding and recovering critical data while maintaining control over data location, operations, and encryption keys.

As businesses' requirements for data sovereignty evolve alongside increasing cloud adoption, Commvault remains committed to meeting its customers. Geo Shield extends Commvault's enduring support for compliance-driven environments, ensuring adaptive data management that aligns with regulatory demands.

The core of Geo Shield lies in Commvault’s adaptive fabric architecture. This separation of control and data planes gives customers authority over data storage locations, protection methods, and access control, whether within customer or partner-managed environments. To accommodate varied customer needs, Commvault aims to offer several cloud sovereignty options:

  • Local Hyperscaler Regions: Utilising Commvault Cloud SaaS to meet data residency requirements.
  • Sovereign Hyperscaler Regions: Including support for environments such as AWS European Sovereign Cloud, with plans for additional regional support.
  • Partner-Operated Sovereign Offerings: Enabling local providers to deliver sovereign cloud services with Commvault software and air-gapped protection.
  • Private Sovereign Cloud Deployments: Managed by customers or partners in exclusive environments.

Commvault Geo Shield’s Intended Capabilities:

  • Strengthen cyber resilience while empowering data sovereignty through deployment patterns that affirm recoverability and operational resilience.
  • Permit customer-controlled encryption keys, supporting models like BYOK and HYOK, and integration with hardware security modules.
  • Ensure operations within defined boundaries, aligned with "no call home" requirements and managed by screened partners.

Bridging Regulations with a Unified Platform: Commvault continues its compliance with a wide array of federal, industry, and global regulatory demands. It supports frameworks such as FedRAMP High, FIPS 140-3, GovRAMP, SEC Rule 17a, HIPAA, PCI DSS v4.0, DORA, and NIS2. Additionally, Commvault aligns with international standards, boasting IRAP PROTECTED status for the Australian Government and certified Cloud Service Provider status with the Dubai Electronic Security Center.
