Joule Capital Partners, in collaboration with Caterpillar Inc. and Wheeler Machinery Co., has embarked on a 4GW project to power their High Performance Compute Data Center Campus in Utah. This next-generation initiative aspires to establish Utah's largest campus, operating some of the world's most sophisticated data centres.

The ambitious project will channel four gigawatts of energy into the heart of the Intermountain West. By leveraging Caterpillar's state-of-the-art G3520K generator sets, the project will deploy an integrated power system, combining prime power with cutting-edge cooling solutions. This architecture is pivotal for the data centre’s high-density server systems, where waste heat conversion ensures energy efficiency.

The power solution encompasses a grid forming battery energy storage, amounting to 1.1 gigawatt-hours, coupled with backup power from diverse fuel sources. Thanks to Caterpillar's expansive manufacturing presence in the U.S., the comprehensive power package is ready to outperform traditional generation technologies, heralding a new era of speed and efficiency in delivering compute capacity.

A fully integrated system featuring controls, switchgear, inverters, energy storage, and CCHP governs the seamless operation. Not only does this provide a complete power solution for Joule’s data centre, but it also delivers a competitive edge for its tenants. Caterpillar and Wheeler's proactive service and support fortify the system, ensuring unwavering performance and availability.

“This project represents the core of Joule’s mission—to deliver artificial intelligence (AI) ready compute capacity by pairing world-class data centre campuses with reliable, on-demand power,” said David Gray, President of Joule Capital Partners. “By combining Caterpillar’s advanced energy systems with Wheeler’s local expertise, we can bring gigawatt-scale capacity to market faster and more efficiently than ever before, ensuring our tenants have the power and reliability they need to thrive in the next generation of high-performance computing.”

“Caterpillar is uniquely positioned to tackle the growing energy needs for artificial intelligence and the evolving needs of modern infrastructure. This project is a perfect example of how we can deliver fast, reliable power generation to our customers through integrated energy solutions," said Melissa Busen, senior vice president of Electric Power at Caterpillar Inc. “We are proud to work with Joule and Wheeler to help bring this project to life.”

“This strategic alliance between Joule, Caterpillar, and Wheeler brings together world-class engineering, local expertise, and visionary energy design”, said Bryan Campbell, CEO of Wheeler Machinery Co, “We’re proud to help deliver a resilient solution ready to meet future compute demands and set a new standard for data centre infrastructure.”

The collaboration exemplifies an enduring commitment to catering to modern infrastructure's energy needs. By aligning world-class engineering with local expertise and innovative design, this alliance showcases a resilient solution geared to meet future compute demands and redefine data centre infrastructure standards. The alliance stands as a testament to the power of innovative partnerships in shaping the compute landscape.
