Nokia partners with MLGW for revolutionary 5G private network deployment

Nokia collaborates with MLGW to establish the first municipal full-scale private 5G network in the U.S., modernizing utility services across Memphis.

Nokia has been selected by Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) to deploy a comprehensive private 5G wireless network across Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. This project is a key element in MLGW's long-term grid modernization strategy, aimed at enhancing power distribution and enhancing service restoration efficiency.

As the largest three-service municipal utility in the United States, MLGW serves over 420,000 customers. This landmark initiative makes MLGW the first municipal utility in the nation to implement a full-scale standalone 5G private network. Nokia’s cutting-edge solution will not only unify communications across electric, gas, and water services but also improve data connectivity, operational efficiency, and resilience.

MLGW’s Grid Modernization Initiative will benefit from fast and reliable communication, increased grid device reliability, and advanced automation capabilities. It provides the backbone for future technologies, including electric vehicles and battery storage.

Nokia's technology will enable real-time communication and automation across MLGW's operations, supporting critical applications like automated meter reading, fault detection, and remote operations. This foundation is essential for innovations in connected mobility, voice, and video services.

The collaboration represents a major milestone for MLGW in building a future-ready utility infrastructure. It also highlights Nokia’s expertise in delivering end-to-end private networks that facilitate digital transformation, ensuring improved service reliability.

Key components of the project include Nokia’s AirScale radio access equipment, 5G Core Enterprise Solutions, a microwave backhaul solution, and managed services supported by Nokia's NetGuard cybersecurity products. These implementations are designed to protect the network through proactive threat detection and response measures.
