IBM uses Virtustream to run SAP in the cloud

Rather than build its own solution to run SAP applications in the cloud, IBM has partner with Virtustream, which has already cracked that particular problem

Here is another good example of how the cloud creates an environment which reduces the need for the continual re-invention of technology `wheels’. IBM, despite being a partner of ERP giant, SAP, has opted to use Virtustream’scloud management platform (CMP) software, xStream, as an option to deliver SAP and SAP HANA environments on SoftLayer, rather than use up investments in time and resources to develop its own solution. The use of xStream will handle both managed and customer managed SAP environments.

“We believe the combination of xStream, Virtustream’s cloud management software, and SoftLayer’s cloud infrastructure will be the premier cloud solution offered in the market today.”

In addition, Virtustream will also utilise SoftLayer datacentres and cloud infrastructure to expand its own Infrastructure-as-a-Service business service beyond current capacities in the US and UK markets in which it currently operates.

Rodney Rogers, Chairman and CEO of Virtustream, sees an explosive market for migrating, running, and managing mission-critical SAP applications in the cloud. “We believe the combination of xStream, Virtustream’s cloud management software, and SoftLayer’s cloud infrastructure will be the premier cloud solution offered in the market today.”

xStream is purpose-built for enterprise, government and service provider customers wanting to deploy mission-critical and production applications in cloud environments. It can be added to existing virtualised and/or physical infrastructure to provide highly secure, compliant and performance assured clouds, whether they are private, public or hybrid.

The company’s underlying Virtustream Micro-VM technology enables IT expenses to be efficiently reduced, while assuring the overall performance of the mission-critical applications when running in a cloud. With xStream, customers are now able to move existing mission-critical enterprise applications to the cloud, without re-engineering the software, and without compromising on performance or security.

The SoftLayer cloud, managed by xStream,  will enable clients to migrate and run the entire SAP portfolio in the cloud. The solution supports both production and test and development environments and delivers dynamic cloud efficiency, on-demand scale, assured performance and enhanced security.

“Businesses today are looking for ways to lower the cost of deployment and gain greater efficiency in addressing new market opportunity,” said IBM General Manager of Cloud Services, James Comfort. “By delivering SAP applications using the SoftLayer cloud running Virtustream’s Cloud Management Platform software, companies will now have broader choices and new levels of control to design the cloud environment best suited to their business.”
