Portable tool for securing optical networks

Optical network cyber-security specialists, Glimmerglass, has cut-down its existing CyberSweep security system to produce  a portable version, MicroSweep, for fast attack response

Speed and convenience are often important selling points for cyber-security tools, especially if attempting to identify and isolate a threat with a new entry point into the system. That is the target for a new, cut-down, mobile security tool from Glimmerglass Cyber Solutions, which specialises in cyber security systems for optical networking systems.

The company has had, for some time, an enterprise-scale security system called CyberSweep, and it is this that has now been cut down to create  MicroSweep, which is configured for portable and rapid deployment.

It comes pre-configured, and little additional set-up is required. MicroSweep is compact and capable of monitoring signals frequencies up to 10Gbps. It also comes with the company’s intuitive Sapience Instant Insight analytics software, allowing analysts to identify and analyse threats.

CyberSweep is an agile platform for identifying persona from communications networks and performing behavioural and predictive analytics to identify internal and external threats as well as identifying the source from communication networks.

Its architecture consists of a centrally controlled unified system for producing actionable intelligence from optical and electronic signals. It consists of a fully integrated end to end management system, Path Manager, that manages the major stages of the CyberSweep: Selection, Signal Processing, and Sapience.

Path Manager is an integral part of CyberSweep, providing a scalable workflow solution for end-to-end management of the cyber monitoring process, as well as accelerating time to intelligence. It also provides full auditability, centralised events and logs, provisioning and configuration, and maintenance control.

The CyberSweep selection stage applies the capabilities of the company’s Intelligent Optical System to acquire specific wavelengths from among many and distribute them for analysis and storage. It can  acquire, distribute and/or multicast optical signals to any known destination. The process is fully transparent. Every port of the optical system supports any protocol, format, and data rate, current and future.

The Signal Processing stage processes optical signals, extracts the data source format of unknown signal mappings, and aggregates the data for analysis equipment, such as application probes. In this stage critical metadata is discovered and processed, and prepared for CyberSweep Sapience.

This coordinates the application probes to collect, filter, correlate, and report targeted and general results to an Analysis Centre. Sapience delivers insights on general network traffic and usage patterns based on metadata to establish normal behavioural patterns. The analytics delivers in-depth information and predictive analysis focused on specific targets. The actionable information used for the analysis can be recorded for re-analysis at a later date or for long term storage as required by law.

“The MicroSweep provides a portable, rapid deployment solution for identifying cyber threats in direct response to our international customers in national security and public safety,” said Robert Lundy, President and CEO.
