Lyten, a company specialising in lithium-sulfur batteries and energy storage, has acquired Northvolt Ett and Northvolt Labs in Sweden. The acquisition provides Lyten with 16 GWh of existing battery manufacturing capacity across 160 hectares of land.

The purchase includes advanced infrastructure and buildings, as well as a battery research and development centre. The acquisition supports Lyten’s expansion in the European market.

As part of its growth, Lyten is establishing the Lyten Industrial Hub in Skellefteå at the Northvolt Ett site. The hub will use existing infrastructure, including hydroelectric power, to co-locate battery manufacturing, AI data centres, and complementary industrial operations that are important to both Sweden and the EU.

In a related development, EdgeConneX plans to acquire a data centre site from Lyten in Skellefteå. The site has the potential to scale into a one-gigawatt data centre campus, which would be among the largest in Europe.

Following the acquisition, Lyten will restart operations at Northvolt Ett and Northvolt Labs. Northvolt Ett will produce lithium-ion NMC batteries for battery energy storage systems, automotive applications, and other mobility sectors. Sales of these cells are expected to supply Lyten’s BESS manufacturing facility in Poland by the second half of 2026.

At Northvolt Labs in Västerås, collaboration with Lyten’s Silicon Valley team will focus on industrialising lithium-sulfur battery technology for large-scale production.

To support these operations, Lyten will launch a rehiring programme in Skellefteå and Västerås. Based on projected customer demand, the company expects to employ over 600 additional staff within the next year, maintaining a continued hiring pace in the following years.

The local municipality of Skellefteå noted the significance of resuming battery production, which aligns with the EU’s battery strategy and contributes to Europe’s position in the sector.
