Kao Data's unveils report aiming to propel UK AI ambitions

Kao Data unveils a roadmap to align government and industry for bolstering UK's AI capabilities under the AI Opportunities Action Plan.

Kao Data, a specialist in developing advanced data centres tailored for AI, has launched a strategic report aimed at driving forward the UK's AI ambitions as outlined in the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan.

The report, "AI Taking, Not Making", offers actionable steps for bridging the gap between government initiatives and industry readiness. It emphasises building upon the recent £31 billion commitments from leading US tech companies like Microsoft and Google.

Focusing on three key strategic pillars, the report underscores the importance of harmonising energy pricing, modernising grid infrastructures, and adjusting the UK’s AI copyright laws. These factors are crucial for realising the potential economic benefits anticipated from the Government’s Plan for Change.

Key Proposals

  • Integration of data centres within the Energy Intensive Industry (EII) frameworks.
  • Implementation of zonal power pricing near renewable sources to advance energy efficiency.
  • Grid modernisation essential for unlocking the predicted 10GW AI capacity by 2030.

The report also advocates for a pragmatic review of AI copyright laws, balancing protection for creative sectors with the need to keep the UK competitive as a centre for major AI training projects.

Enhancing the government's AI Growth Zones (AIGZs) is also pinpointed as a strategic move to ensure robust coordination between public and private sectors. This would help in quick scaling of the UK’s AI capacity.

"Britain possesses extraordinary advantages, world-leading research institutions, exceptional engineering talent, and now substantial investment to back the country’s AI ambitions,"  noted Spencer Lamb, MD & CCO at Kao Data. "By working in partnership with government, we believe we can transform these strengths into the physical infrastructure that will power the next generation of industrial-scale AI innovations and deliver solutions that position the UK at the forefront of the global AI race."
