Novachips unveils advanced SSD for space applications

Novachips introduces the NN765R, a resilient SSD engineered for challenging satellite environments and embedded systems.

Novachips Co., Ltd. has unveiled its latest innovation, the NN765R, a customised COTS M.2 SSD designed specifically to meet the rigorous demands of satellite and embedded system applications. This move underscores Novachips' commitment to pushing the boundaries of flash storage solutions.

The NN765R is engineered with advanced measures to shield its components against low-energy protons, utilising special coating materials. Furthermore, enhanced Error Correction Code (ECC) and firmware recovery technology have been integrated to rectify bit errors stemming from high-energy proton exposure. This combination ensures reliability even in challenging conditions.

Inspired by insights gained from avionic applications, the NN765R maintains exceptional reliability across a spectrum of extreme temperatures, while drawing less than 3 watts of power. Even during full-speed operation, it boasts impressive read/write speeds reaching up to 3GB/s. The SSD's structural integrity is fortified, meeting MIL-STD-810G shock and vibration standards. This rugged durability is achieved through a reinforced body secured with dual side screws.

Sejong Yoo, General Manager of Novachips, acknowledges, "Protons trapped by Earth's magnetic fields are a major cause of errors and failures in electronic components operating in satellite environments." He further highlights the NN765R's capability to endure proton flux exceeding 1,000 times the norm in typical satellite environments, marking it as an efficient high-bandwidth storage solution. Its specifications render it a superior alternative to traditional space-grade memory components.

The NN765R series is available in a dual-side M.2 80mm form factor, offering capacities of 330GB, 660GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Its radiation-shielding properties and bespoke firmware can be tailored to other form factors to accommodate diverse project needs.

This amalgamation of radiation resistance, energy efficiency, and robust performance positions the NN765R as an affordable and trustworthy choice for future satellite and aerospace systems.
