Virgin Media O2 earns recognition for sustainability leadership

Virgin Media O2 garners accolades for significant strides towards carbon reduction and responsible business operations.

Virgin Media O2 has recently been lauded with two notable awards recognising its commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. The company proudly secured an ‘A’ rating from the non-profit CDP for its Supplier Engagement Assessment in the 2024 disclosure cycle. This top-tier rating highlights the company's robust measures in collaborating with suppliers to reduce absolute Scope 3 emissions by 90% by the year 2040.

Ensuring that partners align with Virgin Media O2's Science Based Targets to mitigate global warming risks is among their strategic approaches. To this end, the organisation has established specific baselines and carbon reduction plans with its suppliers, resulting in more precise third-party emissions reporting. An indicative breakthrough includes the production and supply of customer equipment, such as the Hub 5 WiFi router casing, now manufactured from 100% recycled plastic, significantly cutting embodied carbon by 2.5kg CO2e per unit.

Additional Initiatives Include:

  • Engagement with suppliers to share best practices in implementing decarbonisation strategies through webinars.
  • A comprehensive commitment to achieving net zero emissions across its value chain by 2040.

In addition to the CDP rating, Virgin Media O2 has been recognised with a "Bronze Medal" from EcoVadis for its impressive sustainability performance, placing it in the top 35% of organisations globally. This assessment spans critical areas including environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement, following international standards.

These achievements underscore Virgin Media O2's unwavering dedication to its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, encapsulated in the Better Connections Plan. Noteworthy strides include the reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 56% and Scope 3 emissions by 19%, relative to the 2020 baseline, in 2024.

As Virgin Media O2 continues on its sustainability journey, the commitment to reducing environmental impact while fostering company growth is evident in every facet of its operations, reinforcing its leadership role in the domain.
