In a significant move poised to elevate Gibraltar's digital landscape, Pelagos Data Centres has announced the construction of a cutting-edge facility, capable of delivering up to 250 megawatts by 2033. Situated on a 20,000 square metre site near the Port of Gibraltar, this development is set to be Gibraltar's largest ever by value, commanding a colossal £1.8 billion investment.
The project, backed by private investment and the Government of Gibraltar, positions the territory as a pivotal node in Europe's digital infrastructure, capable of catering to the burgeoning data centre demand driven by Artificial Intelligence advancements.
Construction will commence in phases, with the initial stage operational by late 2027 and further phases to follow every 18 months. The facility prioritises sustainability, aiming to achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2030 through renewable energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) sources.
A unique feature includes a public leisure amenity for the local community, bolstering the project's appeal. Notably, the centre is designed to operate independently from Gibraltar’s current power grid and strive for a stellar Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of approximately 1.2.
Employment opportunities abound, with 500 construction roles and 100 permanent positions set to invigorate the region's job market. Pelagos Data Centres is committed to bolstering local skills and planning extensive staff training and recruitment.
The facility will adhere to Tier III standards, providing a carrier-neutral environment recognised for high availability and reliability. It will seek prestigious international certifications across several domains, including information security and environmental sustainability.
The scale and ambition of the project render it the most significant infrastructure investment in Gibraltar since the early 1990s, re-establishing the territory as a hub for technological and economic innovation.
A technical briefing is slated for early 2026 to detail the infrastructure's intricate design and execution, aligning with the project’s anticipated construction start.
