Simpson Associates, a renowned data transformation partner, has announced a strategic partnership with Cleveland Police. The collaboration focuses on implementing RedactXpert®, an AI-powered redaction software, across the force to streamline document redaction processes.

Cleveland Police, tasked with redacting countless case files for the Crown Prosecution Service, sought a more efficient alternative to their existing tool. Their journey into AI-driven redaction began with RedactXpert®, a software that utilises the power of AI to automatically redact Personally Identifiable Information (PII) within documents.

Developed by Simpson Associates, RedactXpert® is one of the few tools that seamlessly integrates with the Microsoft Azure AI Service. It promises enhanced accuracy and speed, crucial for Cleveland Police's demanding operational needs. The initial phase of the partnership involved a comprehensive AI Assessment, which evaluated how AI could revolutionise police operations and improve citizen experiences.

The assessment identified key areas for improvement, leading the force to trial RedactXpert®. Their evaluation prompted an 8-week trial phase, during which they confirmed the software's compatibility with their Microsoft Azure environment. The decision to trial RedactXpert® was heavily influenced by Cleveland Police's existing investment in Microsoft technology.

During their trial period, Cleveland agreed to be a development partner for RedactXpert. Working in close collaboration with Simpson Associates and Microsoft, this enabled them to help shape the next phase of the product development, ensuring it was fit for purpose for police needs.

Glen Ward, Superintendent at Cleveland Police, explained, “Our strategic partnership with Simpson Associates will benefit us long term and ensure we’re future proofing our technology roadmap. In addition, Simpson Associates are equipped to support us longer term on our AI journey across multiple solutions.”

“Using RedactXpert, we’ve now reduced the time spent redacting by 50% which is incredible, but more importantly now frees up further resource to focus on frontline policing.”

Following the trial, Cleveland Police has fully deployed the software across the force.

In addition to its redaction capabilities, the partnership with Simpson Associates extends to future AI developments. Cleveland Police anticipates integrating other Azure-based AI applications, such as translation and transcription tools, which hold the potential to further improve operational efficiencies.

Simpson Associates expresses enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasising the invaluable input from Cleveland Police in shaping future developments of RedactXpert®. The collaboration is hailed as a significant step forward in AI adoption within the policing sector.
