Digital Realty Athens Data Center Campus selected by AWS

Digital Realty says that a new AWS Direct Connect on-ramp is available at Digital Realty’s ATH3 data center in Athens enabling low-latency access to AWS services via a single cross connect.

By utilizing this reliable connection, Digital Realty’s customers in Athens will be able to easily connect their private infrastructure directly to the AWS Mediterranean Region, enabling improved performance for hybrid architecture solutions with low-latency, secure, and cost-efficient connectivity to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

With the addition of the Athens Campus, PlatformDIGITAL® now houses 18 AWS Direct Connect cloud on-ramps globally in Amsterdam, Ashburn, Atlanta, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Frankfurt, Johannesburg, London, Madrid, Marseille, Paris, Seattle, Seoul, Stockholm, Vienna and Zurich. Customers can interconnect directly in these locations, as well as leverage virtual access to every AWS Direct Connect location via Digital Realty's interconnection solution and orchestration solution ServiceFabric® from almost 135 locations globally.

AWS Direct Connect is the shortest path to customers’ AWS resources. While in transit, customers' network traffic remains on the AWS global network and never touches the public internet. This reduces the chance of hitting bottlenecks or unexpected increases in latency. When creating a new connection, customers can choose a hosted connection provided by an AWS Direct Connect Delivery Partner or choose a dedicated connection from AWS. Digital Realty provides the physical meeting place where AWS customers and AWS partners can establish direct connections to AWS, optimizing hybrid IT solutions.

Greece’s position as a rising data center hub in southeastern Europe is driving a surge in data exchange volumes and an accelerating demand for digital infrastructure. As the country expands its digital capabilities, investments in technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and interconnection are expected to grow rapidly. With strong government support for digital transformation, Greece is laying the foundations to become a regional nexus for data and connectivity.

“As Greece continues its digital transformation journey, more and more enterprises recognize the value of placing their infrastructure in highly connected, secure, and cloud-enabled facilities like ours. The launch of AWS Athens Direct Connect strengthens Greece’s position as a key regional digital hub and significantly enhances the connectivity options available through PlatformDIGITAL®. With direct access to leading cloud providers, a growing ecosystem of local and international carriers, and advanced orchestration through ServiceFabric®, we are empowering businesses in Greece and the broader region to modernize their IT infrastructure and unlock new growth opportunities,” said Alexandros Bechrakis, Managing Director, Digital Realty in Greece.

With the first AWS Direct Connect in Greece, customers can transfer data privately, securely, and directly from their data center, office, or colocation environment into and out of AWS. These private connections can reduce your network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than connections over the public internet. Customers can choose dedicated 10 Gbps and 100 Gbps connections, or work with an AWS Direct Connect delivery partner like Digital Realty for hosted connections with bandwidth from 50Mbps to 10 Gbps,” said Doug Lane, Director, AWS Direct Connect.
