Asanti aims at NetZero

Asanti Datacentres Ltd, the leading Scottish-based data centre operator, has signed an energy supply deal which will reduce the carbon emissions at its operations across the UK to zero.

The deal with Bryt Energy means that Asanti will reduce their carbon footprint significantly, reducing carbon emissions related to its 14m KW of energy use to zero, eradicating an estimated 2,856 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Asanti operates six “Regional Edge” data centres across the UK, including Hamilton, Livingston, Reading, Leeds, Farnborough and Manchester.

The news comes during the Scottish Government’s ‘Climate Week’, an annual event that encourages individuals, communities and businesses to come together and raise awareness of what’s being done to tackle the global climate emergency.

The signed 100% renewable electricity contract (Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)) means that Asanti’s data centres will be powered by a combination of solar, wind and hydro energy which will be supplied by Bryt Energy. Businesswise Solutions supported Asanti throughout the process and will continue to manage the energy procurement on Asanti’s behalf.

Asanti’s move to 100 per cent zero carbon compares to a UK industry average of less than 40 per cent.

“We are delighted to confirm this switch to a green energy future,” commented Stewart Laing, Asanti’s Chief Executive.

“Our clients in both the public and private sectors are striving towards ‘Net Zero’, and we can assist this in a variety of ways. It is important to be able to assure them that we are on the same pathway and committed to finding new and innovative ways to achieve fully sustainable ways of working.

“As organisations move to optimise service delivery, and to do so much more efficiently, they choose the flexibility and effectiveness of a modern `Regional Edge’ data centre. We can deliver these services for them, within any of our existing data centres, within their own operations or build bespoke, more sustainable data centres specifically to their requirements. We can help customers deliver their services more efficiently, reducing power consumption, at lower costs - and reduce their carbon footprint.

“Together we can ensure Scotland is at the forefront of digital investment and infrastructure as we handle the challenges — and opportunities — of future service delivery to the market.”

Asanti is well-equipped to meet the soaring demands for data centre capacity, as organisations embrace technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). The need for low latency when handling high-volume data processing is paramount, enabling fast downloads and video streaming, for example.
