Powering up Beijing data centre giant 24/7 with energy savings

ABB helps Chinese data centre keep the data flowing with almost 100 percent power reliability.

The installation of an intelligent power solution for the Kangsheng Data Center in Beijing will support its goal of becoming “a low carbon and green data center” while securing 99.99 per cent power reliability. As China’s USD 30.681 billion data center market continues to underpin its booming digital economy, this innovative ABB solution will guarantee 24/7 system availability for this critical infrastructure.

Launched in 2016, Kangsheng Data Center is a vast 12,800 square meters of colocation space for leading domestic and multinational companies. In line with its sustainability goals and China’s wider carbon peak and neutrality targets, the facility required a complete upgrade to ensure power security for critical information and data assets while minimizing energy consumption. In the context of the energy-intensive data center industry, where even a second of power downtime can have huge implications for financial losses and reputational damage, it was equally important to achieve this while ensuring the highest levels of power reliability.

ABB’s response was a holistic one. Delivering reliable power for Kangsheng Data Center is ABB’s MegaFlex DPA TM – an advanced Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) solution designed to ensure smooth, 24/7 operations and deliver 99.99 percent availability and reliability. Ideally suited to ‘always on’ operations, the technology’s innovative modular design enables simple servicing without wiring to ensure business continuity and zero downtime. Its industry-leading 97.4 percent efficiency at system level helps the data center to drastically reduce energy use and emissions. Further energy efficiency aspects of MegaFlex DPA - such as the Xtra VFI - help to minimize losses and improve efficiency by automatically adjusting the number of active modules according to the power load requirement.

The ABB Ability™ Energy Manager and ABB Ability™ Asset Manager platforms provide in-depth analysis, trends reporting and predictive maintenance, 24/7, remotely and via a mobile device. This will help the data center to achieve savings of up to 40 per cent on maintenance costs, up to 30 percent on operating costs and up to 30 percent on utility bills. Completing the ABB solution is a range of Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) technologies including circuit breakers and switches.

James Zhao, senior vice president of ABB China, said: “Achieving energy savings and high efficiency to greatly reduce operating costs and emissions is crucial in the data center industry where cooling, essential to maintain reliable operation of the equipment, consumes large amounts of electricity.”
