EDF Energy deploys IIoT

Remote monitoring capabilities to increase value to customers whilst reducing carbon footprint.

EDF Energy, Great Britain’s largest supplier of electricity by volume, has deployed PTC’s market-leading ThingWorx® Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) platform, to remotely monitor and gather operational intelligence for its innovative energy monitoring and control platform, PowerShift. System Integrator and PTC Partner, Capula, was instrumental in facilitating the ThingWorx deployment.

EDF Energy understands that the energy landscape is rapidly changing, as government, businesses and individuals look for ways to optimise energy consumption. To support this shift, the company developed PowerShift, a cloud-based energy trading, monitoring and control platform that provides businesses with a flexible, new way to manage how and when energy is consumed.

“PowerShift enables customers to both save and make money, allowing them to optimise energy, as part of a wider distributed power network,” said Chris Regan, Head of Energy Trading Services. Powershift was created within Bluelab, the home of EDF Energy’s Customer Innovation. “Having utilised our significant experience in the energy trading element of PowerShift, we then partnered with technology experts to enhance the monitoring and control aspect for PowerShift users. Capula’s OPUS tool, which is built on PTC’s ThingWorx IoT platform, is now a core component of PowerShift. ThingWorx’s role is to drive efficiencies and cost reduction by monitoring, collecting and analysing energy data. By using Powershift, EDF Energy customers can drive savings and revenue from their flexible assets by making capacity available for the National Grid.”

Purpose-built for industrial environments, ThingWorx is a complete, end-to-end technology platform that delivers the functionality, flexibility, and agility needed to develop, deploy, and extend IoT applications and augmented reality (AR) experiences. The award-winning platform contains a broad set of features, including multiple connectivity options, application development tools, analytics, and AR. With ThingWorx, industrial businesses can create scalable and secure solutions that provide high levels of return on investment.

“ThingWorx enables improved energy efficiency by providing operational intelligence to EDF Energy customers,” said David Grammer, VP for UK and Nordics at PTC. “Helping to reduce the carbon footprint is another excellent example of how the right IIoT technology can positively impact businesses and the world. We are pleased to support EDF Energy and Capula as they continue to make significant strides for our environment.”
