Huawei releases FusionStorage 8.0

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019, Huawei released its next-generation data center-level converged distributed storage — FusionStorage 8.0. It leverages mature enterprise-grade storage and public cloud capabilities, helping industry customers such as carriers and financial institutions easily cope with cloud migration challenges.

The Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, cloud, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and many other cutting-edge technologies pose scalability and management challenges to traditional centralized storage with silo-like deployment. Customers want a new type of storage that bridges numerous gaps between different models, centrally stores and manages various applications, reduces their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and improves the service efficiency of digital platforms.

In increasingly complex cloud environments, Huawei FusionStorage 8.0 allows one storage system to support block, file, object, HDFS, and database protocols. FusionStorage 8.0 manages mixed workloads in all scenarios. It supports full data lifecycle management from data generation and disaster recovery, to analytics and archiving, which protects free data mobility on- and off-premises while ensuring a consistent user experience.

The First Distributed Storage to Support Critical Workloads

Huawei FusionStorage 8.0 is the first distributed storage system in the industry to support critical enterprise workloads. It enables one cluster to scale out to 4,096 nodes and provides tens of millions of IOPS. With enterprise-grade storage chips and FlashLink® acceleration technology, FusionStorage 8.0 allows nodes to work with SSDs more efficiently, provides a latency as low as 0.5 milliseconds, and offers state-of-the art performance. Perfect for core carrier databases and financial online productions that require quick I/O responses, the groundbreaking technologies ensure high-speed and stable operation for critical enterprise workloads.

Equipped with Huawei's proven HyperMetro (active-active) solution of enterprise storage products, FusionStorage 8.0 provides 99.9999 percent solution-level reliability to ensure uninterrupted operations in virtualization and database scenarios. Additionally, FusionStorage 8.0 offers the industry's only asynchronous replication technology that supports second-level Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) for business continuity across data centers. With Huawei-proprietary self-adaptive deduplication and compression capabilities, FusionStorage 8.0 offers up to a 5-to-1 data reduction ratio even in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) scenarios, which further helps users reduce storage space.

Convergence Across Five Dimensions

As the only vendor that provides public cloud services and chips alongside conventional storage, Huawei integrates the distributed storage platform with elastic scalability, extensive enterprise-grade features, and chip optimization capabilities to deliver data center-level convergence across industries.

Huawei FusionStorage 8.0 implements one-stop deployment through converged protocols to eliminate silo-like deployment when using different protocols. This reduces TCO by 30 percent and improves resource utilization. With converged critical workloads, FusionStorage 8.0 lets one storage system support both core and emerging enterprise applications. Converged scenarios allow one storage system to manage data throughout its lifecycle from generation, usage, and management, to backup and archiving. Converged clouds afford the integration of edge, private, and public clouds on one platform, which offers consistent user experiences. Converged management allows a unified intelligent platform to provide integrated O&M and operations, realizing data intelligence and creating value.

With the five convergence capabilities, FusionStorage 8.0 achieves the "One Data Center, One Storage" goal, simplifies storage device models, shatters management complexities, reduces data usage costs, and enables free data mobility and sharing on- and off-premises. What's more, Ever New Device Service eliminates service interruption risks and the need for data migration.

As a Huawei FusionStorage customer, China Mobile (Liaoning) has deployed more than 10 petabytes of capacity in total. The system has operated incident-free for more than four years, improved database system performance, and significantly reduced the time to process 100 terabytes of operations analysis data from over 10 hours to just 2 hours, which has ensured always-on services.

"Data centers are shifting from the traditional silo-like architecture to cloud-ready," Meng Guangbin, President of the Intelligent Storage & Data Management Domain, Huawei’s IT Product Line, said, "The next-generation FusionStorage 8.0 leverages convergence across five dimensions to remove the barriers between enterprise data. It's the first distributed storage to support critical workloads and realize the 'One Data Center, One Storage' goal, meaning the jump to digital has never been easier. FusionStorage has provided data storage services for thousands of enterprise users worldwide."
