According to findings from Veritas, the majority of global organisations, 56 per cent, have a cloud-first mentality and are embracing the multi-cloud as a key component of their business strategy when it comes to deploying new applications and managing workloads.
However, as organisations migrate on-premises data and workloads to the cloud, they face major challenges and pain points, including visualising their data, migrating data to the cloud in a simple and cost-effective manner, and protecting workloads in the cloud, in complex hybrid environments and on-premises with no vendor lock-in.
Veritas NetBackup™ 8.1 protects data and workloads, ushers in ultra-fast deduplication technology
Backup and recovery remains a fundamental business requirement and grows in importance in a multi-cloud world. As a core capability of the Veritas 360 data management portfolio, Veritas NetBackup 8.1provides unified data protection for multi-cloud, virtual and physical environments that can be globally managed from a single console. Available at the end of the month, Veritas NetBackup 8.1 will introduce powerful new deduplication technology—Veritas NetBackup CloudCatalyst—that enables customers to take greater advantage of the cloud while saving money.
Today, many organisations understand the value in using the cloud to reduce complexity and increase agility, but they are eager to reduce recurring costs associated with storing massive volumes of secondary data on a long-term basis across multiple clouds.
By deduplicating or removing duplicate copies, NetBackup Cloud Catalyst will help customers shrink the size of that data nearly three times faster than alternative solutions in the industry today. Once duplicate copies are removed, customers can then store data in the cloud at potentially much lower costs while making no physical changes to the network. With Cloud Catalyst, backups can be executed more quickly and extra cost savings can be realised when migrating data to hybrid, private or public clouds.
The new deduplication technology will be available in multiple form factors as part of NetBackup 8.1, either as licensed software or the NetBackup Cloud Catalyst 5240 Appliance to automate a customer’s path to multi-cloud environments.
Also new in NetBackup 8.1 is Veritas NetBackup Parallel Streaming, a unique, patented capability that enables rapid data protection of in-demand, cloud-based, scale-out workloads and applications, such as NoSQL, Hadoop and Cassandra. With others, the process to backup these critical big data workloads takes extensive amounts of time, particularly for organisations that must adhere to stringent data protection requirements, like financial or healthcare institutions. NetBackup Parallel Streaming delivers on-demand protection for the rapid deployment of these next-generation workloads. Each of these innovations build on Veritas’ strong leadership and heritage in backup and recovery solutions.
Veritas Information Map™ with new data connectors takes data visibility mainstream
Information Map provides customers with a real-time picture and interactive view of their data assets. With today’s announcement, the immersive, visual experience of Information Map will be dramatically enhanced with connectors for 23 new data sources for both on-premises and cloud-based data storage repositories, enabling customers to see what data they have across a wide array of environments. This broad visibility enables customers to make better decisions about what data to retain, migrate or delete and can also help ensure compliance with data regulations around the world, such as HIPAA and the European Union’s forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The new connectors will be generally available in the coming quarters, at no additional cost and include Microsoft Azure Storage, Microsoft OneDrive for Business, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Exchange, Google Drive, Google Cloud Storage, Oracle Database, Box and others. Additional product integrations will also be available with Veritas Backup Exec, Veritas Enterprise Vault and Veritas Access, providing greater visibility into data, regardless of where it resides. Information Map is available as a stand-alone purchase or as part of the Veritas 360 Data Management Suite.
To deploy the new connectors, customers will be able to leverage Information Map’s new Connection Center a central interface for managing all data store connectors that also includes a sharable, plug-and-play framework to accelerate development and delivery of these and future connectors, from Veritas and our worldwide technology partners.
Veritas NetBackup™ 5340 Appliance delivers customer choice with scalable and resilient data protection
Many organisations prefer a hardware appliance form factor for their data protection and management as a means of simplifying and accelerating deployment, whether in the data center, a remote office or in the multi-cloud. The new Veritas NetBackup 5340 appliance, available in the coming quarter, will offer all the benefits of NetBackup 8.1 in a reliable, high-performance integrated appliance, as well as the ability to scale and easily protect tens to hundreds of petabytes of data. NetBackup appliances and virtual appliances continue to provide the ultimate choice for customers.
“We are living in the age of multi-cloud, where organisations require a policy-driven data management strategy to protect valuable data assets across multiple data centers, public and hybrid clouds,” said Mike Palmer, executive vice president and chief product officer, Veritas. “Today, with more than 20 new connectors in Information Map and advancements to NetBackup 8.1, organisations can now protect more cloud-based workloads, reduce storage costs in multi-cloud environments and gain increased visibility of data that historically has been hard to identify—all critical components of a successful multi-cloud strategy.”
“With over 16 years of industry experience, as a Veritas Platinum partner and managed services provider, we work with clients to host and deploy solutions on-premises or in the cloud. It’s imperative today to have a technology that enables businesses and government agencies to protect and manage data, archive what’s required, and expire what isn’t both on-premises and in the cloud,” said Matthew Edwards, president of bluesource. “Veritas offers new capabilities in NetBackup 8.1 that include industry-leading insight, availability and data protection technology to help customers protect petabytes of data and quickly find and recover critical data at a moment’s notice.”
