Renewable energy for Scottish data centre

DataVita, a Scottish datacentre provider, has selected SSE as its chosen energy supplier, meeting the objective of powering the Fortis datacentre using 100% renewable energy sources. This will allow customers to reduce carbon emissions by 95% for their IT services hosted in the facility.

SSE Green, provided by SSE Business Energy, is aimed at supporting businesses in the UK to manage their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. SSE will supply renewable energy matched to Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origins (REGOs), certifying that the electricity used has been generated exclusively through a portfolio of wind and hydro assets.

Gareth Lush, Commercial Director at DataVita said “Datacentres are fast becoming one of the largest consumers of energy in the world, so when we set up DataVita it was important to us from both a personal and corporate social responsibility perspective to create the most energy efficient datacentre possible. Building in Scotland’s cool climate gave us the perfect opportunity to achieve a class leading annualised Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.18 but it was equally as important that our energy supply came from 100% renewable sources.  For us the REGO model made sense.  We need the reliability of the grid and the end goal has to be to get the grid using 100% renewable energy.”

Terry Tippell, SSE’s Director of Business Energy said: “SSE Green allows businesses to demonstrate their commitment to renewable and sustainable goals, as well as enhancing their environmental reputation and commitment to customers and other stakeholders. We are delighted that DataVita has chosen SSE Green, and we are working closely with them to build a bespoke contract and monitor their energy consumption. We are delighted that SSE Green allows DataVita to meet their objective of powering their business using 100% renewable energy sources.”
