Kroll Ontrack predicts rise in data recovery requests for Apple devices

New Apple products including the iPad Pro will drive usage in business as well as for consumer apps.

Kroll Ontrack predicts that the growing use of Apple iPads and iPhones in business will create more demand for Apple data recovery services in 2016.  The prediction follows a recent report from IDC that shows the number of traditional PCs shipped globally in Q4 2015 falling by 10.6%.

Apple’s dominance of the tablet and smartphone market has already flourished along with the choose your own device (CYOD) phenomenon, but is set to be boosted further by the introduction last year of business focused products such as the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.

Phil Bridge, Managing Director for Western Europe at Kroll Ontrack said: “The rebalancing of devices used by SMEs and corporates between traditional PCs/laptops and smartphones/tablets has been underway for a while, but we believe that it will accelerate as Apple devices like the iPad Pro are adopted more widely in the year ahead.  While the majority of Apple data recovery jobs we’re seeing are based on retrieving data from iPhones with water damage, we are preparing for more requests from our reseller partners to help corporates retrieve data from Apple products used in business.”

The popularity of iPhones and iPads makes for some interesting case studies.  Three of Kroll Ontrack’s Top 10 Data Disasters in 2015 involved Apple devices: an iPad that was dropped from a train in remote woodland, an iPhone that had cleanser tipped over it and another iPhone that was run over by a lawnmower in a bizarre gardening accident.  In all three cases the customers’ data was restored.

Phil Bridge continues: “Our partnership with Apple means that customers are able to retain their device’s warranty after any data recovery operation is undertaken in our clean room.  We are trusted and authorised by Apple to unseal their devices for data recovery purposes and this means our end-customers and reseller partners alike can have huge faith in the services that we provide.”
