PhishMe appoints Chief Threat Scientist

PhishMe has appointed Gary Warner as Chief Threat Scientist where he will work closely with PhishMe CTO, Aaron Higbee, and his team to provide strategic direction on PhishMe products and technology.

Gary joins the team from Malcovery Security, recently acquired by PhishMe, where he served as co-founder and chief technologist, leading the company’s threat intelligence product innovation and architecture development. As the visionary, inventor and patent holder for much of Malcovery’s technology, Gary brings over two decades of cybersecurity and technical know-how to PhishMe’s executive team and will help guide the integration of Malcovery’s services into the PhishMe product line.
“PhishMe and Malcovery have always shared a common vision to deliver defensive capabilities that protect public- and private-sector organizations against the most common and effective cyberthreat today — phishing. The acquisition is delivering to market product, research and intelligence capabilities that are unmatched,” said Warner. “I’m excited to join PhishMe’s experienced team to contribute to the company’s rapid growth and to develop its portfolio of phishing mitigation, detection and response solutions, in addition to enhancing its threat intelligence capabilities.”
Gary was the founding president of the Birmingham chapter of the FBI’s InfraGard program and has served on the boards of the InfraGard National Members Alliance and the National Board for the Energy ISAC. He is a world-renowned researcher and speaker on the subject of catching cyber criminals, and has been recognized by FBI Director Robert Mueller for “Exceptional Service in the Public Interest.” He received the IC3 and NCFTA’s Partnership Award “in recognition of his outstanding support in the ongoing battle against cybercrime.” This extensive background in law enforcement and combating cybercrime will help the PhishMe team stay abreast of the latest threats facing organizations – especially those that have had high impact on their victims – and give insight into the modus operandi of these attackers.
In addition to Gary’s new role at PhishMe, he remains the Director of Research in Computer Forensics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). In this role, which brings together the Computer and Information Science department and the Justice Science department, he conducts research that helps law enforcement and other security professionals identify, apprehend, prosecute and convict cybercriminals, and spreads information to victims and potential victims about cybercrime issues.
“Gary’s more than 20 years of technology experience will add strategic firepower on the technology front, as PhishMe continues to be the go-to anti-phishing training solution in wide use in enterprises today,” said Aaron Higbee, CTO and co-founder of PhishMe. “Acquiring Malcovery has joined together some of the most advanced threat-protection technologies available today and the addition of Gary to our team will continue to support our drive to protect our customers against cyber attacks.”
“We highly value Gary’s guidance as we fully integrate the Malcovery team and services into our organization,” added Rohyt Belani, CEO and co-founder of PhishMe. “We are thrilled to have the entire Malcovery team onboard to continue our recent explosive growth as we dominate the phishing threat management and intelligence space.”
