Helping IT professionals guarantee uptime and efficiency

Power management company Eaton has launched a cloud and virtualisation-ready uninterruptible power supply (UPS) which offers IT professionals unmatched system resiliency and cost-efficient business continuity. Ideal for server rooms and small data centres, the Eaton 93PS bridges the gap between electrical and IT infrastructures and ensures maximum availability via market-leading management and virtualisation technology. Achieving up to 99 per cent efficiency, the new 93PS also offers the lowest Total Cost of Ownership and is said to be the most efficient UPS in its class.

“With most Service Level Agreements based on availability, avoiding downtime is a key priority for IT professionals. However, pressure to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly, coupled with the increasing commoditisation of IT services, means minimising operational costs and capital expenditure is also crucial,” explained Rabbe Johansson, Product Manager, Eaton Power Quality EMEA. “With Eaton’s new 93PS, IT professionals can always access the power their application needs, in all circumstances, without compromising business performance.”

The Eaton 93PS is a uniquely intelligent UPS that is both virtualisation and cloud ready. It features Eaton’s Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) and Intelligent Power Protector (IPP) software which integrate with leading virtualisation and storage platforms so that IT administrators can monitor and manage their complete system from a single pane of glass. IPM also enables the use of simple, policy-based controlled automation which can be configured to trigger on certain power and environmental events. Users can also create policy-based integration between their power infrastructure and virtualisation and storage platforms, for example, working with VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) to initiate the migration of VMs to a back-up site to maximise availability without data loss. Another key benefit is load shedding which increases battery runtime to provide a larger window of opportunity for SRM disaster recovery.

Another key technology feature is Eaton’s Energy Saver System (ESS). Already delivering safe and reliable power in major data centre hubs around the world, ESS enables the UPS to deliver up to 99 per cent efficiency by suspending power modules when power conditioning is not required. The system is, however, ready to switch to double-conversion mode in under two milliseconds if required. ESS also enhances the reliability of the system by reducing stress on the electrical components, extending the life of the UPS and helping IT professionals reduce the Total Cost of Ownership.

To guarantee high efficiency, even when UPS load levels are low, the new 93PS uses Eaton’s Variable Module Management System (VMMS) which optimises the load levels of power modules in a single UPS, or in parallel UPS systems, by suspending extra UPS capacity.

The 93PS has also been designed to be highly scalable. Hot swappable and hot scalable modularity means replacement and upgrades typically take less than ten minutes. The inclusion of Eaton’s patented HotSync® wireless paralleling technology means a system can be scaled up to four units in parallel. By deploying additional equipment when needed, data centres can optimise capital expenditure but still respond quickly to increases in demand. Additionally, the 93PS can be scaled up without increasing the footprint, saving valuable floorspace.
