Datto, has announced the acquisition of Backupify, the leading provider of cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery solutions for software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications. The acquisition will create the first complete platform to protect business data no matter where it lives. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Datto and Backupify have solved the problem that most traditional disaster recovery and backup providers have not, which is that all data protection plans must be as fluid as the information flowing in and out of the companies that rely on them. As more critical data continues to move to the cloud, companies will demand more diversity as they decide which workloads to protect and where. As a result, Datto and Backupify will now offer the most comprehensive options for backup, disaster recovery and business continuity for companies of all sizes, ranging from small- to medium-sized businesses to large enterprises.

“At a time when data lives in and flows freely from on-premise servers and systems, virtualized environments and third-party clouds, data protection and recovery takes on a whole new meaning,” said Austin McChord, founder and CEO of Datto. “Backupify provides must-have solutions for companies entrusting their data to SaaS applications, and our team will help complete the vision of creating a Total Data Protection Platform that extends across a company’s entire digital ecosystem, as well as expand to new global markets, including Europe, Asia, and Latin America.”

The joined forces of Datto and Backupify will dramatically accelerate the combined company’s core strategy of delivering a platform for protecting business data – whether it is housed on-premise, in a cloud or within SaaS applications. Together, the new platform will bring new services to customers through the channel by offering instant recovery and protection of data in the face of any disaster or IT failure, and also broaden Datto’s 24/7/365 customer service model. Beyond that expansion of support and functionality, Datto and Backupify customers and partners will continue to be serviced as they always have been by their sales, account management and support teams, and partners will gain exposure to a wider prospect base.

Dr. Steve Herrod, managing director at General Catalyst Partners and Datto board member, said, “Hybrid cloud disaster recovery and data protection is one of the enterprise’s most transformative technology initiatives, as it is paving the way for hybrid cloud integration within the enterprise. Datto is leading the pack, and the acquisition of Backupify only makes Datto’s innovative technology architecture and cloud-based approach all the more powerful.”

“Until now, the cloud platform market had no way to fully extend data protection across the digital landscape. The strengths of Datto and Backupify in this area are incredibly complementary,” said Rob May, CEO of Backupify. “It became abundantly clear to us that the best way to safeguard the world’s business data and keep companies running no matter what was to join forces to build a Total Data Protection Platform, and we look forward to bringing that to our combined customer and partner base around the world."
