3M shows products that focus on safety, sustainability, power efficiency and faster data transmission speeds in data centres

3M, the diversified technology company, is demonstrating a wide range of products designed to address safety, sustainability, efficient use of power and faster data transmission speeds in data centre environments. Drawing on the company’s global R&D, the products on show encompass fire suppression, advanced cooling, copper cabling and fibre cabling systems.

Mark Nursall, 3M Technical Sales Specialist, will be presenting at 14.55pm on Thursday 27 February about ‘Reducing greenhouse gases through the use of safe and sustainable fire suppression in your data centre.”

3M focuses on products that balance environmental and safety issues against the demand for space-efficiency, fast data transmission and reduced power consumption.

Products featured at Data Centre World include:
Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid from 3M – designed as a ‘clean’ agent, Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid from 3M extinguishes fire at the incipient stage. With its zero ozone depletion potential and environmentally-friendly profile (GWP of 1), it is increasingly being chosen as an alternative to Halon and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC)-based fire suppressants, as a result of Fluorinated Greenhouse Gas (F-Gas) Regulations.

As Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid does not damage sensitive electronic or electrical equipment, it is more suitable for data centres than water-based systems. Plus, the equipment that houses Novec 1230 requires minimal floor space, so it is ideal for space-constrained data centres.
Fibre cabling - 3M has developed a range of fibre cabling products that are designed to support high-speed data communications, even in small places. Products include Multi-Fibre Push-On (MPO)which enables up to 96 fibre connections to be made on a single 1U rack unit, across OM3, OM4 and OS2 fibre standards. MPO is provided as a pre-terminated product for fast on-site installation.

Other fibre products span a wide variety of options, including steel armoured and break-out fibre optic cable, single-mode and multi-mode fibre optic connectors (across ST, SC, FC and LC styles). These are available with a choice of on-site termination processes, including No Polish Connector (NPC), Hot Melt and Crimplok+ Connector.

Copper cabling systems – 3M offers a complete range of copper data cabling solutions across Category 5e, 6 and 6A with options for UTP, F/UTP and S/FTP. The range is designed to provide installers, consultants and their customers alike with a single, reliable brand that is simple and quick to install. All main industry standards are supported and products are designed to deliver high performance and long-term reliability, from cables to jacks to faceplates, patch cords and panels.

The recently-introduced Category 6A 3 Cable Entry RJ45 has three cable entry points for more flexible options when choosing the right cable path. This means that installers have a greater range of choice when terminating cable connections in data centres: across floors, ceilings, ducts or to patch panels, helping them to avoid unnecessary bending of cable and consequent impact on performance.

Cooling - 3M also offers a range of Novec Engineered Fluid. These are inert cooling fluids that offer heat transfer efficiency, low environmental impact and maximum worker safety. These systems can help data centre owners to improve thermal management by transferring heat away from components and equipment (Novec Engineered Fluid is over 1000 times more efficient at removing heat than air, when comparing the physical property of volumetric heat capacity for air and Novec Engineered Fluid). They can also significantly reduce cooling costs and running costs. Stand H30 will also feature a liquid cooled computer system from Iceotope; a solution that harvests the heat from Electronics using 3M Novec Engineered Fluids.
