With up to 8.5 TB of native capacity per cartridge and native data rates of 252 MB/sec, the StorageTek T10000D tape drive stores and retrieves more than 3x the data per cartridge and offers 57 percent faster native throughput than LTO-6. With 3:1 compression, it can achieve data rates more than 19 percent faster than the IBM TS1140, while storing more than twice the data per cartridge. Deployed in the Oracle StorageTek SL8500 tape library system, the StorageTek T10000D enables customers to scale in excess of 68 exabytes of capacity under a single point of management.
Continuing to drive new innovation into tape storage, Oracle today announced the StorageTek T10000D tape drive, the industry’s fastest, highest capacity tape drive, providing a breakthrough opportunity for cloud service providers to monetize faster than any other storage media.
With 54 percent more capacity per cartridge over the previous generation, up to 8.5 TB native, the StorageTek T10000D tape drive can help customers reduce acquisition costs for data center backup by 35 percent.
The StorageTek T10000D tape drive stores and retrieves data at record speed, up to 252 MB/sec native, enabling customers to meet backup recovery time objectives and archive SLAs with fewer tape drives. The StorageTek T10000D can achieve data rates 57 percent faster than LTO-6.
It is also the first tape drive with support for both 16 Gb/s Fibre Channel and 10 Gb/s Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), ideal for next generation converged data centers.
The new capabilities broaden the appeal of tape storage in markets with large file assets, including media and entertainment, oil and gas, healthcare imaging, and cloud services. Cloud service providers can monetize tape faster than disk media due to its longevity, durability and lower cost. In media and entertainment, customers can store five hours of 4K digital content on a single tape cartridge and over 16 million hours of 4K content in a single Oracle StorageTek SL8500 tape library complex.
Additionally, with Oracle’s Linear Tape File System (LTFS), customers can drag-and-drop multiple LTO LTFS enabled volumes onto a single StorageTek T10000D cartridge for large data consolidation projects.
Oracle will host a Webcast on September 17 at 10 a.m. PT to discuss the new StorageTek T10000D tape drive and LTFS Library Edition software, also announced today, in more detail. Both new digital archiving solutions are featured this week at the IBC2013 conference in Amsterdam in the Oracle exhibit, Hall 9, Exhibit 9.D15.
StorageTek T10000D Extends Oracle’s Lead in Tape Reliability, Data Integrity and Ease-of-Use, Protects Customers’ Tape Investments
The StorageTek T10000D tape drive’s Data Integrity Validation (DIV) feature allows validation without requiring transfer of the data back to the application, enabling customers to schedule more frequent, less resource-intensive data integrity checks over the lifetime of their data.
Fully supported by StorageTek Tape Analytics health monitoring and reporting software, customers can further enhance long term digital data resiliency.
The StorageTek T10000D tape drive is backward read compatible with all three previous generation StorageTek T10000 tape drives.
The StorageTek T10000D uses the same media as its predecessor, enabling customers to increase capacity 55 percent without investing in new media.
