John Siemon awarded International Standards Medal by ANSI

John Siemon, chief technical officer and vice president of global operations for the Siemon Company, has been awarded the Astin-Polk International Standards Medal by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in the 2013 Leadership and Service Awards. The awards, announced in July, will be presented at a banquet and ceremony on 2 October 2013 in Washington, DC, to be held in conjunction with World Standards Week.

John Siemon has been specifically recognised for distinguished service in promoting trade and understanding among nations through the advancement, development or administration of international standardisation, measurements, or certification.

Throughout his career, John has been an active participant in industry standards organisations, developing network cabling and related infrastructure standards. His past positions have included chairman of the TIA TR42.1 subcommittee, responsible for commercial premises cabling; chairman of the US advisory group on international cabling standards (authors of ISO/IEC 11801); and chairman for BICSI's Technical Information and Methods Committee. He is currently chairman of the US Advisory Group on Interconnection of IT Equipment (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25).

Annually, ANSI honours 17 distinguished leaders for their significant contributions to national and international standards activities, as well as ongoing commitment to their industry, their nation and the enhancement of the global voluntary consensus standards system.

Commenting on the award and recognition from ANSI for his contribution to the industry, John Siemon, said “This is an important honour and it means a great deal to me both professionally and personally. I am proud and grateful for having worked with our industry’s foremost experts to guide the evolution of globally harmonised cabling standards that guarantee reliability and interoperability, whilst keeping pace with successive generations of networking applications. Above all, I am proud to work for Siemon; a company with an unfailing commitment to innovation and to the network infrastructure industry.”

ANSI is the official United States representative to the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and, via the US National Committee, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is also the US representative to the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). It is a private non-profit organisation with a membership made up of businesses, professional societies and trade associations, standards developers, government agencies, and consumer and labour organisations. The Institute represents the interests of more than 125,000 companies and organisations and 3.5 million professionals worldwide.

World Standards Week 2013 will focus on how standards bring confidence to businesses, governments and consumers. According to ANSI, standards facilitate technological innovations and foster evolving social and environmental compliance practices that increase the health and safety of the world and its citizens. They are the foundation upon which developing nations build their economies and compete in the global market. Developed by collaborative bodies that act as forums for the public and private sectors to come together for a common good, standards evolve to meet the changing needs of a world at work and play.
