A recent report from uptrends.com highlighted that 20 of the top UK’s gambling sites had an average downtime of four hours over a four week period during January to February 2013, costing them over £120,000 per month in lost revenue from website bets alone, demonstrating the extent of poor performance and a growing problem. With online gambling sites basing their business models around real time interactions and a need to react to instant change, even a second of downtime can have major consequences for the user experience and the business.
“Last year saw a dramatic spike in mobile betting, with traffic increasing by 174%,” says Owen Cole VP EMEA. “This is great news for the online gambling sector, however when coupled with an average of four hours downtime this only spells disaster. Consumers are very fickle, if they can’t place a bet, they won’t wait for a site to come back online, they will simply move on to a competitor.
“Through Operational Intelligence IT managers can spot problems appearing in their networks and applications before they happen, not only allowing them to keep their systems running at all times, but also develop their services and ensure they reap the rewards from the UK’s passion for the odd flutter.”
With a summer of sport ahead, online betting traffic will start to peak over the coming weeks, making it crucial for gambling sites to ensure their infrastructures are able to cope with the traffic in real time and to deal with the ever changing odds which customers expect when gambling on a live event.
David Hobson, Sales Director, MTI comments, “We are currently working with many online gambling companies to ensure they have the right solutions to cope with the amount of traffic they receive. We have partnered with ExtraHop to get real time application visibility and to give our customers in depth visibility of their network. With this we are giving our clients the gift that every gambler dreams of – a look into the future to predict exactly what will happen and how to react in the right way, every time – effectively taking the gamble out of IT.”
