MapR Technologies and VMware team up

MapR Technologies, Inc. and VMware have announced that MapR’s Distribution for Apache Hadoop is now certified for VMware vSphere®. Through the VMware Ready™ program, the two companies conducted a detailed validation process, which now enables joint customers to easily deploy and run the MapR Distribution for Hadoop on VMware vSphere and receive commercial support.

“MapR and VMware have worked closely to offer enterprises a dependable, high-performing and easy- to-use Hadoop distribution to help them gain insights from Big Data,” said Fausto Ibarra, senior director, Product Management, VMware. “As Hadoop technology continues to evolve, customers are realizing the benefits of combining a Hadoop distribution explicitly designed for enterprise-use cases, with a powerful and flexible virtualization platform such as VMware vSphere®. Our joint efforts will help enterprises to accelerate their adoption of Hadoop.”

Solving Big Data Challenges Using Hadoop on VMware vSphere
The MapR Distribution for Hadoop running on VMware vSphere enables enterprises to use Hadoop to make better business decisions based on large data sets, while achieving enhanced agility and greater control of IT resources to utilize hardware more efficiently. By virtualizing the MapR Distribution for Hadoop, IT departments can achieve the benefits of running Hadoop in a pool of existing compute and storage resources, and on one common platform such as VMware vSphere. Enterprises are now capable of rapidly deploying new virtual Hadoop clusters in minutes using Project Serengeti and VMware vSphere.

“Customers look for enterprise-grade software when deploying mission-critical applications in their datacenters,” said Alan Geary, senior director, Business Development, MapR Technologies. “The combination of VMware vSphere®, the world’s most widely deployed virtualization platform with MapR’s unique high availability, and business-continuity capabilities provides a Hadoop solution capable of supporting mission-critical deployments.”
“While Hadoop started as an open-source technology, it is quickly becoming a mission-critical enterprise technology that companies view as a competitive advantage. The MapR Distribution for Hadoop on VMware vSphere® naturally targets enterprises serious about running Hadoop for mission-critical workloads,” said Ben Woo, managing director, Neuralytix. “MapR has consistently prided itself on creating a reliable, fast and scalable big data distribution for enterprise customers. This collaboration around deploying Hadoop on VMware vSphere further reinforces that message.”

Quickly Deploy Apache Hadoop in Virtual Environments with Project Serengeti
In June 2012, VMware introduced Project Serengeti™, an open-source project that helps enterprises quickly deploy, manage and scale Apache Hadoop in virtual and cloud environments. VMware has engaged the Apache Hadoop community, including MapR, to help enterprises take advantage of VMware vSphere to deploy a highly available Apache Hadoop cluster in minutes, including common Apache Hadoop components like Apache HBase, Apache Hive and Apache Pig. The latest release of Project Serengeti features support for MapR and Apache HBase, among other updates. Together with MapR’s scalable and reliable Hadoop Distribution, VMware offers enterprises comprehensive tools to deploy, run and manage Hadoop on VMware vSphere.
