Do-It-Yourself software for accelerating offsite replication

Silver Peak Systems has introduced a new family of downloadable software products that are purpose-built for storage professionals to accelerate their offsite data replication workloads. The new Silver Peak VRX-2, VRX-4 and VRX-8 software products are part of Silver Peak’s Velocity solution, which combines unmatched data acceleration technology with flexible pricing to deliver 20x faster replication performance (on average) over any distance.

72 percent of organisations want to do more offsite data replication, but 66 percent believe they are limited by the Wide Area Network (WAN) performance. The Silver Peak VRX software overcomes WAN bandwidth, distance and quality challenges and allows storage professionals to meet their recovery point objectives (RPOs) by replicating more data, over longer distances, and in less time. The software enables businesses to lower disaster recovery (DR) costs by eliminating costly dedicated networks for replication and avoiding specific bandwidth upgrades for replication workloads.

“Most storage professionals understand the importance of offsite data replication, but until now, have been handcuffed by the network when attempting to extend the distance of their replication apps,” said Everett Dolgner, director of replication product management for Silver Peak. “Silver Peak VRX software puts the power and control of data acceleration in the hands of the storage administrator. In less than 20 minutes, a storage manager can easily meet their RPOs, lower disaster recovery costs and extend the distance between replication sites.”

The new VRX products are based on Silver Peak’s Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA), which uses real-time optimisation techniques to maximise replication performance over any existing WAN infrastructure. The software deploys seamlessly into any replication environment and runs on all standard hypervisors, including VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer and KVM. It supports Silver Peak’s full VXOA capabilities and is proven with all asynchronous IP-based replication solutions from Dell, EMC, HDS, NetApp and others.

The new VRX software comes in three models:

* VRX-2 – Replication capacity of up to 60 GB/hr for $2,764/year
* VRX-4 – Replication capacity of up to 300 GB/hr for $8,297/year
* VRX-8 – Replication capacity of up to 1.5 TB/hr for $38,731/year

Quick and Easy Set-up for Storage Professionals With Silver Peak VRX virtual software, storage professionals can accelerate their replication traffic in under 20 minutes. No special networking expertise is required. The storage administrator downloads the desired VRX software from the Silver Peak marketplace, installs the software in the same locations as the source and target devices on the hypervisor of their choice, and redirects traffic to the VRX from the source and target storage devices with a few simple commands.
